Days Out from The Bait: Hereford
Discover this Quirky Cathedral City
30 minutes drive from The Baiting House
Hereford, nestled on the banks of the River Wye, is a city steeped in history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or simply in search of scenic relaxation, Hereford offers something for everyone. Here's how to make the most of a day out in this delightful city.
Morning: History and Heritage
Hereford Cathedral
Start your day at the magnificent Hereford Cathedral, a stunning example of Gothic architecture that dates back to the 11th century. Be sure to visit the Mappa Mundi, a medieval map of the world that is one of Hereford's most famous treasures, housed within the cathedral’s Chained Library. This unique collection of chained books offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.
Black & White House Museum
Four centuries of history in one extraordinary house. Discover how Hereford’s people lived, worked and thrived inside this Jacobean landmark.
Late Morning: Explore the Town
Museum of Cider
Well worth a visit to learn about the contribution of cider to Hereford’s history.
Rockfield Spirits
Hereford’s very own gin distillery. We sell a wide selection of of their products here at The Baiting House, and we love both the brand and the product! They offer gin tastings as well as a fascinating insight into the art of gin making.
Lunch
Ludlow is a foodie paradise so you’re truly spoiled for choice when it comes to food. These are a few of our favourites:
Green Dragon Hotel
Slap bang in the middle of town , an old fashioned hotel with lovely lunchtime snacks and afternoon teas.
Beefy Boys
Situated in the new Cattle Market developed just off the town centre, this is the place to come if you’ve got a big appetite and love burgers. They are a-mazing!
Rule of Tum
A modern British brasserie serving coffee, brunch, lunch and snacks. Just a couple of minutes walk from the market square.
On your way back…
Berrington Hall
A gorgeous estate, run by the National Trust, with gardens by Capability Brown. You could lose yourself for hours in the grounds.
OK we’re biased. This is owned by the same family as The Baiting House. But it’s a gorgeous, quaint village pub with hearty non-nonsense food.
Our favourite brewery anywhere, and makers of our best-selling HPA and Butty Bach ales. Their shop in Stoke Lacy (halfway between Hereford and The Baiting House) has a shop that’s open daily, as well as brewery tours which run once per week.
